I briefly had Windows on my Dell Inspiron , and tried using an old build of Firefox. Couldn't do much browsing without the computer blue-screening, if I recall. Now it has XP, with MyPal and an old version of Chrome installed, and it works much better for browsing.
Of course, I pretty much only do it for fun, and stay away from dodgy sites. KernelEx will help you with that, albeit I never got it to work on German installations myself. But your old computer must be a powerhorse on Core2 level at least for this.
Otherwise, Opera I've heard that K-Meleon and Pale Moon are good alternatives too, but haven't tested them before.
